TEXTURE TECHNIQUES - BASIC (1 day: 09.30 - 14.00)

In this one-day workshop, we’ll explore three basic approaches to creating texture on clay: imprinting, sprigging and slip techniques, and carving. 1. Imprinting: Exploring everyday objects We’ll experiment with ordinary household objects such as sieves, combs, forks, brushes and other unexpected tools to discover the patterns and marks they can leave in clay. After trying different options on a test slab, you’ll choose your favourite and apply it to your first piece. 2. Sprigging & slip techniques: Adding texture We’ll explore different ways of adding clay to a surface to create raised textures and details. Experimenting with additional clay and silt, we’ll try different tools and application methods before choosing a technique to use on your second piece. 3. Carving: Working into the surface We’ll experiment with cutting, scratching and scraping into the clay using different tools, including a spatula. After testing the possibilities, you’ll choose your preferred approach and apply it to your third piece. Throughout the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to try new tools and techniques, discover what you enjoy most and put your favourite approaches into practice. You’ll leave with three individual pieces, each exploring a different way of creating texture. Participants who wish can further finish their pieces during the open studio days. After the bisque firing (included in the workshop price), you can glaze your piece and have it stoneware fired. If you have a strippenkaart, additional costs for glazing and firing are €1.00 per 100 grams of clay. Prefer to visit the studio only once to finish your piece? The cost is €15.00 per hour, plus glazing and firing costs of €1.00 per 100 grams. What to bring: - An apron and a towel - Your own lunch (there is no lunch break, but you're welcome to eat whenever it suits you during the day) - 3 smal cups or bowls, leather-hard & trimmed - Small objects for creating refined surface textures ( don't worry if you don't have any) What's included: - Extra slabs or tubes for demonstration and experimenting - Silt in all kind of colours - The use of all tools needed for this workshop - Bisque firing of 3 small pieces Duration workshop: from 09:30 to 14:00 This workshop will be conducted in English and will take place with a minimum of 8. No experience is required. (This basic workshop is a prerequisite for the advanced workshop later this year. Registration and costs for the advanced workshop are separate.)
